What does it mean to be an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) school?

The IB primary years programme is a philosophy of teaching and learning.  According to the mission statement of IB, their goal is to “encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.” The IB PYP aims to achieve this goal by using inquiry based learning to help students explore and make meaning of the world around them. In this type of learning, the teacher shifts from being the provider of information to a guide of thinking and developer of problem solving skills.  This allows your child to gain ownership over his or her education through voice and choice as they explore, question, and investigate their wonderings.

Why is Colorow becoming an IB school?

Over the course of the last few years we have been looking into options for programming that would enhance the great learning that is already happening at our school.  The staff collectively chose IB because we feel that it best aligns with our long held value of educating the whole child. In addition, Dakota Ridge and Summit Ridge offer IB programming to their students, and our programme will now complete a PreK-12 pathway for students seeking an IB education in south Jeffco.

When will Colorow be an IB school?

Currently we are in a transitional phase.  Last spring we applied for and were granted candidacy status with IB.  This means that we are working to align our practices with those of IB.  We anticipate that this process will take us two years and that we will be applying for full authorization in the spring of 2022.

Will my child still meet the Colorado state standards?

Yes, what students learn (determined by Colorado content standards) will not change.  The shift will be in how they learn that information.  This year we will be aligning our Jeffco curriculum to units of study in our programme of inquiry. As these units are developed they will be made available to our community through our website.

Where can I get more information?
